KHANA’s Inaugural Editorial, 1985

Music is an intrinsic power which exists in every human being: it is a powerful energy in the center core of our being. Imagination is another equally powerful energy source. Music and imagination are in fact inseparable.

The language of the inner self is constructed of images. Many a rigid left thumb has become supple at the image of a small bird nestling in the hand. The external self is helpless acting out words like enchantment, illusion, energy, beauty etc., if they are directed from the intellect alone. Words need to be substantiated by vivid images like the wheel of a Mississippi paddle-steamer within the body – energizing the rhythmic pulse. In many cases, when the concept of energy within us is visualized – using the image of a powerfully flowing river, or volcanic lava, stubborn physical tensions are released.

I am concerned that in this age of technology, many musicians, especially children, become deprived of imagination. It can be very lonely and frightening when one has no link with the inner self. Music teachers have a great responsibility towards the young, because they can help prevent this from happening.

In this 25th year of teaching the release of physical tension and mental anxiety through ‘Song’ and ‘Images’, I would like to express my deep appreciation to Yehudi Menuhin who was among the very first to recognize the truth behind the New Approach.

It is our hope that this Association (KHANA) will enable its members, regardless of whether they are teachers, students, amateurs or performers to help each other find means and ways to serve and further the song within us.
