This survey initiative represents one component of an ongoing historical and pedagogical research study examining the origins, development, and contemporary influence of the New Approach across a wide range of musical and educational contexts.

The teachings of Kató Havas resonated with both seasoned professionals and developing string players seeking guidance on the physiological, psychological, and artistic dimensions of string teaching and performance.  Havas worked with individuals across all levels of experience and did not rely on formal selection or auditions for entrance into her studio or workshops.

In keeping with this spirit, the survey invites participation from individuals with any level of familiarity or engagement with the New Approach, including through teaching, performance, direct study with Kató Havas, work with teachers within her pedagogical lineage, workshops, courses, publications, and professional or generational connections.

Findings from the first phase of this study were presented at the February 2026 American String Teachers Association National Conference, with additional data to be shared at two upcoming conferences:

• ESTA: FiESTA! – Bridging the Past and Future of String Pedagogy — Helsinki, Finland, August 26–30, 2026
